What if my MOT is out of date?

An MOT is a legal requirement that ensures your vehicle is safe to drive and meets all current regulations to be used on the road. Driving without an MOT can result in a penalty of up to £1000.

Can I wait with the car?

The answer is Yes! If you would like to wait, please inform us when booking so we can arrange a timed appointment. Please arrive on time. There is a comfortable waiting area in Reception where a screen provides a clear view of the MOT test station.

What can cause an MOT failure?
There is a range of faults that can result in an MOT failure. To ensure your vehicle has the best chance of passing its MOT we advise reading through our Pre-checks listed below or referring to any advisories for your vehicle from the previous MOT and its last service.

Please click the tab above to review more information on MOTs and a variety of checks you can perform before your test to help increase the chances of your vehicle passing.

If you don't have time to perform these yourself you can book in for a PRE MOT Test on Class 4 vehicles.

What Is a Pre-MOT Check?

A pre-MOT check is an informal inspection carried out before your vehicle’s official MOT test. It’s designed to catch common faults early—especially those that could lead to a test failure—so you can address them in advance.

PRE MOT

What Does It Typically Include?
A pre-MOT check covers many of the same areas as the MOT itself, including:
•     Lights and indicators: All must work properly and be the correct colour.
•     Brakes: Pads, discs, and fluid levels should be in good condition.
•     Tyres: Must have legal tread depth (at least 1.6mm) and no damage.
•     Wipers and washers: Should clear the windscreen effectively.
•     Horn: Must produce a loud, continuous sound.
•     Seatbelts: Should be secure and undamaged.
•     Battery and wiring: Must be secure and free from corrosion.
•     Fluids: Oil, coolant, and brake fluid should be topped up.
•     Number plates: Must be clean, legible, and properly fixed.
•     Exhaust and emissions: Should be intact and not excessively noisy or smoky.

Why Is It Worth Doing?
•     Saves money: Fixing minor issues beforehand can avoid costly MOT failures.
•     Reduces stress: You’re less likely to face unexpected repairs on test day.
•     Improves safety: Even if your car passes, these checks help ensure it’s roadworthy.

Is a Service the same as a PRE MOT?

No, but it is similar. A vehicle service involves routine maintenance—checking and replacing parts like oil, filters, brakes, and tyres. While its primary goal is upkeep rather than legal compliance, a thorough service can:
•     Spot issues early: Mechanics often check components that overlap with MOT requirements (e.g. brakes, lights, tyres).
•     Improve MOT pass chances: By resolving wear-and-tear problems before the test.
•     Provide peace of mind: Especially if the service includes a visual inspection of safety-critical areas.

Certification Note
•     Pre-MOT: No certificate is issued. It’s a helpful guide, not a legal document.
•     MOT: If the vehicle passes, you receive an official MOT certificate. If it fails, you get a failure notice listing defects

When making an appointment, please be specific to avoid any confusion between an MOT or a PRE MOT.
